AT&T and AST SpaceMobile Announce Definitive Commercial Agreement

Source:

AT&T* and AST SpaceMobile have entered a definitive commercial agreement to provide a space-based broadband network direct to everyday cell phones. This agreement extends until 2030. Previously the companies were working together under a Memorandum of Understanding. This is not just one small step, but one giant leap towards enhanced connectivity for consumers and businesses across the country.

This summer, AST SpaceMobile plans to deliver its first commercial satellites to Cape Canaveral for launch into low Earth orbit. These initial five satellites will help enable commercial service that was previously demonstrated with several key milestones. These industry first moments during 2023 include the first voice call, text and video call via space between everyday smartphones.

The two companies have been on this path together since 2018. AT&T will continue to be a critical collaborator in this innovative connectivity solution. Chris Sambar, Head of Network for AT&T, will soon be appointed to AST SpaceMobile’s board of directors. AT&T will continue to work directly with AST SpaceMobile on developing, testing, and troubleshooting this technology to help make continental U.S. satellite coverage possible.

“Space-based direct-to-mobile technology is designed to provide customers connectivity by complementing and integrating with our existing mobile network,” said Jeff McElfresh, Chief Operating Officer, AT&T. “This agreement is the next step in our industry leadership to use emerging satellite technologies to provide services to consumers and in locations where connectivity was not previously feasible.”

“Working together with AT&T has paved the way to unlock the potential of space-based cellular broadband directly to everyday smartphones. We are thrilled to solidify our collaboration through this landmark agreement,” said Abel Avellan, AST SpaceMobile Founder, Chairman, and CEO. “We aim to bring seamless, reliable service to consumers and businesses across the continental U.S., transforming the way people connect and access information.”

This is another key step on AT&T’s path to providing even more expansive connectivity on America’s largest wireless network1. There are many situations where dead zones outside will become a thing of the past thanks to the reach of a satellite solution providing two-way connectivity.

One day in the not-too-distant future, consumers will feel a greater peace of mind knowing they have connectivity in places like wilderness areas, including our national park land, rural highways, and other hard to reach locations around the country.

Introducing AT&T Turbo: A New Wireless Feature That Gives Customers Real-Time Responsiveness and Enhanced Data Connectivity on the Go

Source:

What’s the news?

AT&T* is the first carrier to give customers the choice to purchase enhanced data connectivity for real-time responsiveness with the introduction of AT&T Turbo on May 2.

Built to support high-performance mobile applications, like gaming, social video broadcasting and live video conferencing, with optimized data while customers are on the go. AT&T Turbo allows users the choice to optimize their network when they want by adding additional network resources to their mobile data connection.

For example, if customers want less freezing or stuttering and lower latency when milliseconds matter in gaming, AT&T Turbo can help offer real-time responsiveness by improving the performance of customers’ data on the network.

How do customers get it?

Through the myATT app or online, customers can easily add AT&T Turbo, priced at $7/month per line on eligible plans, when they want it and remove it from their line when they don’t.

Eligible customers will be in control of whether to activate this service, which boosts all the high-speed and hot spot data on a user’s connection while it is active.2 Consistent with open internet principles, once turned on the boost applies to a customer’s data regardless of the internet content, applications, and services being used.

What’s next?

Today’s launch is only the first step in bringing new, cutting-edge network capabilities to our customers. We’ve seen traffic grow on our network exponentially, and more importantly the technical requirements are increasing for real-time apps like gaming, social video sharing and live video conferences. Latency-sensitive applications will continue to need more enhanced network technologies to perform their best, so we plan to continue to advance and evolve AT&T Turbo.

What are people saying?

“With AT&T Turbo, we are the first to give customers the choice to activate enhanced data with a few clicks. We know customers want more control of their experience, especially while on the go, and AT&T Turbo answers that call by putting it all at our customers’ fingertips,” said Erin Scarborough, senior vice president of consumer product for AT&T. “Today is only the beginning of how AT&T plans to enhance the customer experience through our network and we look forward to evolving the possibilities of AT&T Turbo in the future.”

AT&T’s Eddy Barker Helped Develop DSL. Today, He’s Pushing the Boundaries of Speed With AT&T Fiber

Source:

Today, we celebrate 31 years since the World Wide Web was launched into the public domain. This marked the beginning of what we know today as content sharing – the moment when the internet really took off.

This was around the same time Eddy Barker joined AT&T. As a young engineer, Eddy knew the internet was about to change the world, and he wanted to be part of making that happen.

In those days, people connected to the internet through a dial-up modem. You would plug your computer to the modem, “call” the internet, and then, in about 30 seconds, you were connected. But Eddy knew that dial up internet would not be enough for the technological advancements that were about to come.

The maximum speed of the internet then was roughly 56 kbps. This meant downloading a web page could take several minutes. Downloading a song could take five minutes or more, and low-res video downloads were often an overnight project. And hopefully someone didn’t need to make a call during that download. The internet rode on a conventional telephone line. That means, you are either talking on the phone or you’re browsing on the internet – but never both at the same time.

Seeing the opportunity, Eddy and AT&T Labs engineers worked towards early trials of what would be called Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology. How does it work? His team engineered the internet to still ride on the same telephone line but would route telephone calls to the lower bandwidth and the internet to the higher bandwidth. For the first time, customers no longer needed to hang up the phone just to surf the internet. It was fast and always on. This didn’t just improve the existing experience but enabled entirely new economies and cultures.

Eddy led Southwestern Bell Telephone Company’s (SWBT) first DSL field trial in 1996. The trial not only pioneered the use of DSL at the home or the office but also became the very first implementation of virtual private networking.
