Keeping Communities Connected: Addressing the Digital Divide on Tribal Lands

Source:

As President of the Inter-Tribal Council of AT&T Employees and a member of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas, I take immense pride in my Native American heritage. However, the challenge of being among the least digitally connected in the country is one I’m determined to see us overcome. As part of our commitment to help narrow the digital divide, AT&T is focused on connecting more Tribal lands to high-speed internet and essential digital devices.

Reflecting on the fact that over a third of Tribal lands lack broadband connectivity, and more than 18% of indigenous people have no internet access at all, the urgency for enhanced connectivity is undeniable. In today’s digital landscape, being disconnected from the internet equates to a persistent state of isolation. And the repercussions of this disconnection on individuals and communities are far-reaching and profound. As the internet has evolved into a crucial medium for obtaining information, resources, and opportunities, those who remain detached are met with a myriad of obstacles. Beyond mere convenience, connectivity serves as a gateway to possibilities and life-altering prospects, with the potential to transform the course of a person’s life.

For instance, the recent collaboration between AT&T and the Cherokee Nation to build a cell site in Kenwood, Oklahoma, has brought peace of mind to Brenda Hair, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation reservation. She no longer has to drive over 10 miles for cell service and can now easily contact her loved ones and safety officials at the click of a button, like every other citizen. The tower also significantly improves safety by providing dedicated coverage and capacity to Cherokee Nation first responders on FirstNet®, America’s public safety network built with AT&T. Beyond safety, Cherokee citizens like Brenda can now access education virtually, explore new job opportunities and stay up to date on the latest news and trends from the comfort of her home.

In addition to increasing coverage on Tribal lands by more than 40% from 2020-2022 and expanding FirstNet to 70+ Tribal nations, we’ve opened AT&T Connected Learning Centers® on:

AT&T Connected Learning Centers provide access to free high-speed internet, computers and online learning and digital literacy resources for those who face connectivity barriers. Brenda also touched on the impact the Connected Learning Center will have on the Cherokee community, expressing that, “For many families, we depend on the laptops students get from school to handle anything online. Now, when students must return those to school, there is an alternative we can resort to for all our online needs and stay connected year-round.”

In September, I was fortunate enough to be present at the inauguration of the Pinoleville Pomo Nation Connected Learning Center. Witnessing the sheer joy and excitement on the community members’ faces, as they realized the boundless opportunities afforded by the state-of-the-art Dell computers and high-speed internet, was a powerful and humbling experience. It was in that very moment that I grasped the essence of AT&T’s mission to connect people and felt an immense sense of pride in being a part of an organization that makes such a meaningful impact on people’s lives.

Headline: Zion Israel Update: Staff and operations in Israel and ask for prayers

October 7, 2023

Dear Zion Shareholders and Supporters,

In light of recent events and concerns, we wanted to reach out to our shareholders and supporters with an update regarding our operations and staff in Israel.

We have made contact with our Israeli staff. All our staff in Israel are safe and accounted for. Our drill pad / re-completion site remains unaffected at this time, and our office in Israel remains secure. We are taking precautionary measures set by the government.

Your years of support and prayers for Israel are an incredible encouragement to the Jewish people.

It’s during times like these that we’re reminded of the importance of prayer. We’re incredibly grateful for you, who stand with Israel during difficult times.

We ask for your continued prayers for the safety and well-being of everyone in Israel.

Psalm 121:4-5; 7:
“Indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you — the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The Lord will keep you from all harm — he will watch over your life.”

Sincerely, br>

How AT&T 5G Helps Deaf Athletes and Sports Communications

Source:

AT&T* and Gallaudet University1, the global leader in bilingual education for deaf and hard of hearing students, have collaborated to create the first 5G-connected football helmet—making the game more inclusive by enhancing on-field communication for student-athletes who use American Sign Language. The helmet2 will be used for the first time in NCAA Division III competition during Gallaudet’s home game against Hilbert College, on Oct. 7 at 12 p.m. ET.

As a staple of college sports, we’re always exploring ways to use our expertise in connectivity to advance the way coaches, athletes and fans experience the game. When it came to developing the helmet, we saw an opportunity for 5G technology to make sports more inclusive—and there was no better partner to take possibility to reality than Gallaudet.

From inventing the modern-day huddle in 1894 to serving as the global leader in education for deaf and hard of hearing students today, Gallaudet University has long been a pioneer for innovation. Deaf and hard of hearing athletes have a long history of breaking barriers and proving their innovation and talent on the field.

The helmet will allow coaches on the sideline to select a play from a tablet that will send the play to a lens inside the helmet. The quarterback wearing the helmet will receive the play in augmented reality on the digital display located within the visor. AT&T 5G provides the reliability and low latency for plays to be sent and received at a speed that keeps up with the pace of the game.

Certified Security: New Third-Party Program Providing Standards-Based Validation for Networking Edge Services

Source:

Program aims to establish the gold standard on certifying cybersecurity protections for the next-gen network services fueling the business digital transformation trend

The pace of workplace evolution has been steadily accelerating for more than a decade. Then the global pandemic injected nitrous into the engine of digital transformation and mobilization – by 2024, 75% of workers will no longer have a dedicated desk phone, according to Gartner. This is a massive shift in our customers’ digital infrastructure with networking services at the center of it all.

Companies are increasingly mobile-first, multi-cloud dependent, and urgently concerned about cyberattacks. Software-defined networking, a model we embraced over a decade ago, makes our network agile and responsive for enterprises. But, as digital architecture gets more flexible, diverse, and distributed – clouds, hardware components, IoT devices – customers need to know that every element is secure and protected: the whole and the parts.

Enterprise customers want cybersecurity certainty

Standards are a useful yardstick for measuring cybersecurity protections. But how do you know if your provider is meeting those standards? Taken together, standards and validation of adherence to them can give enterprise customers the confidence they want when it comes to implementing next-gen network edge services. Network edge services have evolved and grown so quickly, our industry hasn’t had a way to validate that our edge services and the underlying networking architecture and related capabilities meet independent, third-party security guidelines.

Until now.

We’re proud to help spearhead a new initiative led by MEF – a global industry association of network, cloud, security, and technology providers – to independently certify cybersecurity protections for networking services. These include software-defined area networks, network edge services, and Zero Trust Architectures.  These Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) networking products and services provided by program participants will be tested, evaluated, and rated against new and existing standards developed by MEF and the industry. This will be the gold standard for cybersecurity validation when it comes to next-gen network services.

Importantly, the SASE products and services are being tested independently, in a lab environment, by CyberRatings.org, a non-profit member organization dedicated to providing visibility and transparency on the effectiveness of cybersecurity products and services.

Industry heavyweights

We’re joined in this effort by other industry leaders like Cisco, Fortinet, Juniper Networks, Versa Networks, VMware, and Zscaler. We expect broader participation across the networking industry and its larger ecosystem of product and service providers once the beta program completes in the first half of 2024.

We operate globally, with networking services like SD-WAN often deployed across customer sites around the world. We’ve always prioritized the customer experience.  We believe a rigorous certification program will provide even greater confidence that our cybersecurity services are delivering. That trust is essential for businesses placing big bets on the digitization of their operations, no matter how far-flung they may be.

At AT&T, we’re “all in” to help our enterprise customers seize the advantages of digital transformation with cybersecurity protections that are measured and validated. They trust us to get the job done, and we’re ready to prove it.

AT&T to Deliver Fiber Internet to More Locations in Lawrence Co.

Source:

In Lawrence County, AT&T* has been selected to build AT&T Fiber to more than 1,200 customer locations in a project valued at more than $4.3 million.

Lawrence County will invest more than $2.3 million and AT&T will invest $2 million in the project that will provide fiber to unincorporated portions of the county between Bedford and Mitchell. The network is expected to be complete in 2 years, after the final agreement between the county commissioners and AT&T was executed yesterday.

“With this project, we’re taking yet another important step toward closing the digital divide for our families, businesses and farms,” said Lawrence County Commissioner Dustin Gabhart. “Once constructed, this new AT&T Fiber will help many of our rural and low-income families who don’t currently have the internet access they need to work and learn.”

“It’s been my focus as a lawmaker to improve broadband access in rural communities. My previous work to pass the next level connections program into law in the Indiana State Senate illustrates that commitment,” said Congresswoman Erin Houchin. “As a new Member of Congress, I’ll keep fighting to ensure unserved areas have access to reliable broadband internet. I applaud AT&T for continuing their efforts toward this goal. Their recent investment in Lawrence County will connect rural communities between Bedford and Mitchell to the global economy.”

Plans call for residents and businesses to have access to superfast internet – delivering up to 5-Gig speedswith symmetrical upload and download speeds. Consistently fast speeds2 and increased bandwidth mean customers can connect multiple devices, stream multiple entertainment sources, quickly upload content to social media and experience ultra-low lag for pro-level gaming – all at the same time.

Extensive planning and engineering work for this project will begin immediately. The network buildout is expected to be complete by late September 2025.

“It’s exciting to be part of a project that will bring transformative change to even more residents in Lawrence County,” said AT&T Indiana President Bill Soards. “Through this collaboration, we’ll be narrowing the digital divide and helping people realize the internet’s social and economic benefits. We’re proud of this work and appreciate the county continuing to put their faith in us.”

This is the second public-private project announced this year between the company and Lawrence County. AT&T was also selected by the county in May to build AT&T Fiber to more than 2,300 customer locations in northwestern portions of the county in a project valued at $3.6 million. This is in addition to the 700 Lawrence County locations that are planned as part of AT&T’s participation in the State’s Next Level Connections broadband grant program.

AT&T is also currently working with Vanderburgh County, the City of Boonville, the City of Martinsville and Delaware County on public-private collaborations to bring AT&T Fiber to those communities.

AT&T is working to roll out AT&T Fiber through public-private partnerships in communities across the country and to further help close the digital divide by encouraging adoption and offering affordable internet solutions.

AT&T is committed to connecting more Americans to reliable, high-speed broadband internet in several ways, including expanding and upgrading our network and participating in the federal Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). The ACP provides eligible households with a benefit of up to $30 a month (up to $75 a month on qualifying Tribal lands3) to reduce the cost of broadband service and can be applied to AT&T Fiber, where available. Or use it toward Access from AT&T, offering speeds up to 100Mbps for $0 after the ACP benefit is applied. After confirming ACP eligibility, those who qualify can go to att.com/getacp call us at 866-986-0963 to sign up for service. Have your ACP application ID handy.

Residents and businesses can learn more about AT&T Fiber at att.com/fiber and can sign up to be notified when service will be available at their address at att.com/notifyme.

About AT&T in Indiana

From 2020-2022, AT&T invested more than $1.1 billion in its wireless and wireline networks in Indiana to expand coverage and improve connectivity in more communities. That investment has increased reliability, coverage and overall performance for residents and businesses. It’s also improved critical communications services for Indiana’s first responders using the FirstNet® network.
